Malaga’s biggest mango cooperative, Trops, has won the award for Best Business Achievement from Actualidad Económica magazine.
The prize recognises the company’s campaigns to promote home-grown mangoes to Spanish consumers.
“At Trops, the consumer is at the heart of everything we do,” noted the cooperative’s general manager, Enrique Colilles.
Under the slogan ‘Release your senses’, Trops is rolling out a new promotional campaign to raise awareness of its mangos among both retailers and the end consumer.
From mid-September to early October, Trops is holding various product tasting sessions at wholesale markets in Madrid and Barcelona and at fruit stores across the country – notably in Madrid, Barcelona, San Sebastian and Palma de Mallorca.
Trops expects a harvest of 13,000 tonnes for the 2018 mango season, an increase of 30 per cent on the previous year.
To reward the loyalty and commitment of its customers, Trops is offering them a chance to win baskets of tropical fruit, exclusive shopping bags or dinner in a 2-Michelin-starred restaurant of chef Dani García through scratch cards.
“Trops wants everyone to know about this product, which in principle people assume to be tropical but is actually grown in the country of Axarquía in Málaga and along the tropical coast of Granada”, said PR manager Vanessa Varo.
The cooperative exports around 75 per cent of its mangoes to Europe, with France, the UK, Germany and the Netherlands among its biggest markets.
As part of its efforts to raise the profile of Spanish mangoes at home, Trops also participates in sporting events such as the Challenge Madrid triathlon.
Also, for the first time this year, the company was recognised by the Spanish Heart Foundation and was an official supplier of the IX Heart Race held in Madrid in September.
