Luis Andújar has become the latest producer to join the Tomate La Cañada PGI. The label – the only geographical indicator for tomatoes in Spain and one of only two in Europe – has steadily increased its production volume since its establishment in 2008.
Located in the Vega de Almería, Luis Andújar specialises in the production of premium segments such as cherry, cocktail and beef heart tomatoes for the export market.
President Luis Andújar said the decision showed the company’s continued drive for growth and innovation to boost its standing on international markets.
“It also reflects our desire to be part of such and important regional project, the main aim of which is to confer tomatoes produced in Almería and specifically in the area defined by the PGI with the prestige that they so clearly deserve,” he said.
“It is important that the companies involved in the scheme collaborate and develop joint strategies to make the whole world aware of what makes our tomatoes so special.”
Francisco López, president of the PGI Tomate La Cañada regulatory council, said it was “a great honour to welcome such a modern, innovative and wholly Almerian company into the fold”.
Luis Andújar is the seventh company to sign up to the Tomate La Cañada PGI, joining Coprohníjar, Vega Cañada, Agroponiente, Parquenat, BioSabor and Casur.
