UK retailer Tesco has reacted to consumer feedback to cut the prices of organic vegetable and salad lines, in a bid to keep organic ranges affordable and counter a drop in demand during the slowing global economic climate.
Tesco has reduced the prices on a range of organic produce including potatoes, carrots, broccoli, asparagus, avocados and peppers.
'Many people are feeling the pinch because of the credit crunch right now so we want to help,' said Tesco's organic produce buyer Jonathan Corbett. 'Shoppers have told us that they want organic produce but want to pay prices closer to the standard equivalent, and this is what we have done.'
Retail analyst TNS has reported that demand for organic produce at retail outlets has fallen 8.1 per cent since the so-called credit crunch began three months ago.
'On top of shoppers' tighter budgets most UK retailers have increased the price of organic produce as a result of last year's poor harvest caused by flooding across the country,' Mr Corbett added. However, with British organic produce now widely available, prices have significantly reduced.
