In the Netherlands, The Greenery has welcomed the announcement that the Sweet Sensation pear has been nominated for the 2011 Fruit Logistica Innovation Award (FLIA), competing against ten other innovative products for the prestigious title at Fruit Logistica 2011 in Berlin, Germany.
Sweet Sensation is a new red premium pear that was given a broad introduction to the market this season, standing out not only for its red blush, The Greenery says, but also it for its sweet, fresh taste.
The variety can be eaten either whole or peeled, and has been introduced in part to encourage young adults to eat more pears.
A club variety, meaning that it is placed on the market according to a closed concept, the pear may only be grown and marketed by licensed holders so that volumes enter the market in a controlled fashion.
High, strict quality and food safety standards apply to its production, the group notes, with the pear grown worldwide and marketed using an attractive, uniform icon – a 'seductive kiss'.
The Fruit Logistica Innovation Award is presented at Fruit Logistica in Berlin each year to highlight new products and services in the fresh produce sector, with visitors to the Berlin Exhibition Grounds on 9-11 February voting for their favourite innovation, before the winner is revealed on the final day of the event.
