US group Supervalu is stepping up its drive to encourage consumers to eat fresh produce by running two promotional campaigns.

In September, the group launched its 'Fresh Produce. Fresh Prices.' initiative, which saw over 200 fresh produce items marked down, something that has stretched across all of its banners.

'You won't see any products disappear from our stores,' spokesperson Mike Siemienas told The Packer. 'But we are trying to provide information so people understand the benefits of eating in moderation and eating a balance of foods.'

The group has also launched a Kids Club programme, which sees each child issued a membership card that entitles them to a free banana or apple when they go shopping with a guardian or parent.
