Sunkist Growers has taken part in a special drive to help feed the hungry by raising funds to support the Northern Illinois Food Bank, contributing a total of US$7,500 to the cause.
Along with Jewel-Osco's Chicago-area retail stores, Sunkist participated in the 'Sharing is Caring' promotion in January, with special display units of Cara Cara oranges set up throughout outlets in the area.
As part of the campaign, with every 3lb bag of Cara Cara oranges sold, US$0.25 was donated to the food bank, with a quarter of Jewel-Osco's stores offering sampling and a take-home recipe booklet to further educate customers about the variety.
'This was a great promotion for everyone involved,' said Lance McMillan, Sunkist's director of national account sales. 'It directly benefits the people who need help the most during these hard economic times. And Jewel-Osco customers can feel good about their contribution to helping those in need in their community.'
