HyVee Sun World donation

After winning a prize draw held by Sun World International at the end of last year, US supermarket operator Hy-Vee has donated the proceeds from the fruit marketer’s Scarlotta Seedless-branded table grapes to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF).

On 3 February, Hy-Vee presented JDRF with a US$5,000 cheque to go towards the non-profit organisation’s efforts to find a cure for type 1 diabetes, according to a joint company press release.

“Juvenile diabetes first struck the Hy-Vee family when company cofounder Charles Hyde’s son died from the disease,” said Hy-Vee vice-president of media relations Ruth Comer.

“Today juvenile diabetes is still an issue that affects families across the country and finding a cure is a cause that is near and dear to the hearts of our employees.”

“In what’s been a particularly tough period for industries and families alike, we wanted to show our appreciation for the success we had in 2009 – particularly with our Scarlotta Seedless-branded grapes,” added Sun World vice-president of sales and marketing Gordon Robertson.

“We’re glad to share a portion of our proceeds from last year’s crop to support Hy-Vee’s dedication to communities and charitable giving.”

Hy-Vee is an employee-owned corporation operating 227 retail stores in seven Midwestern states. In 2008, the company recorded total sales of US$6.2bn, becoming among the top 30 supermarket chains and the top 50 private companies in the US.
