A quality label could help Spain develop promotional campaigns

A leading horticulture figure in Spain is calling for a quality marque for the country’s lemons to defend them against produce from other sources.

Alfonso Gálvez Caravaca, secretary general of the producers’ organistion Asaja Murcia, wants to see a national label established. He proposes it would have an administrative headquarters in the city of Murcia in the region of the same name, which is the largest lemon-producing area in the country.

He said: “The lemon sector needs a brand that guarantees its quality and differentiates it from the competition from other sources such as Turkey. There can be nothing better than a national brand ‘Lemons from Spain’ which would run a head office from Murcia as our region is the main production area.”

Gálvez believes that by creating a quality label, the sector will be better placed to develop promotional campaigns for Spanish lemons around the EU. He concluded: “This project should involve both the regional and national administrations as well as the different links in the Spanish lemons supply chain in order to bring about the best results and ensure that we all benefit.”
