More than 26,000 product tastings took place at airports across Spain last month as part of a campaign by the Spanish government to encourage visiting tourists to consume greater amounts of the country’s fruits and vegetables.
As part of the initiative, which was directed especially at British, French and German tourists, over 75,000 informative leaflets were also handed out, which emphasised the huge variety of Spanish fruits and vegetables available, their health benefits, and their levels of quality and food safety.
Under the slogan, ‘Fruits and vegetables from Spain, every day’, the promotion was staged in the Barcelona, Málaga, Tenerife South, Palma de Mallorca and Alicante airports, with travellers being offered free seasonal products to taste.
Spain’s ministry of rural affairs, which organised the event, estimated that the initiative reached close to 0.5m tourists between 22-28 July, during which time over 50 per cent of visitors to Spain are said to arrive from Germany, the UK and France.
