SunPower Corp is building a 1.1m sq ft solar installation on the roof of Gloucester Marine Terminal's refrigerated warehouse.
The privately funded US$42m project, known as Riverside Renewable Energy, is scheduled for completion by the end of this year, when it will generate the equivalent of nearly 80 per cent of the power used by the privately owned terminal.
The US Environment Agency estimates the project, sited on the Delaware river in New Jersey, will offset more than 9,500 tons of CO2.
Dennis Christou, marketing vice-president of Del Monte Fresh Produce, which is a tenant at the facility, said: 'It is very much in line with our commitment to operate in a sustainable manner.'
