ORGANIC FRUIT AND VEGETABLES

Soil Association Scotland this week welcomed the launch of the Scottish Organic Action Plan, which recognises the positive contribution that organic farming systems make, environmentally, socially and economically.

The launch also illustrates the commitment of the Scottish government to the organic industry.

The government has prepared a report entitled 'Organic Futures: an action plan for organic food and farming in Scotland', which outlines the ways in which the government and the organic sector can work together to deliver public goods.

Soil Association Scotland's strategic advisor, Hugh Raven, commented: 'The Scottish Government should be congratulated for producing this excellent statement of support for organic food and farming. It's now leading the way among governments in the British Isles – in contrast to the missed opportunities of the last few years, when producers have been abandoning organic production for lack of government support. This good news has come very late in the current Parliament – so the crucial challenge now is to ensure that whoever is running Scotland after May implements the actions set out in this plan.'
