Cotton Candy Floss grapes Pandol Sainsbury

UK retailer Sainsbury's has become the first to sell a new candy floss-flavoured variety of table grape.

The launch of the Cotton Candy grapes, which are being supplied by US-based grower-exporter Pandol Brothers, follows the announcement earlier this week that leading importer Mack Multiples was sourcing the innovative fruit for sale to British consumers.

According to Sainsbury's, the fruit tastes 'just like something from the fairground' and is the perfect addition to lunch boxes or for enjoying in front of a movie.

The sweet treat fruit goes on sale in a total of 35 stores on Thursday 1 September, priced €3.39 (£3.00) for a 400g punnet.

Naturally grown and free from added flavours or colours, the Cotton Candy variety was grown and developed in the US state of California.

Derived from the Lambrusca variety, it has a distinctive but extremely sweet flavour and surprising taste of candy floss.

Finbar Cartlidge, buyer at Sainsbury's said: 'We continue to work with growers in Britain and worldwide to discover new and exciting products and Cotton Candy is no exception.

'With all the health benefits of usual grapes, we anticipate this variety being popular with all our customers, whether they want to encourage their kids to eat more fruit or simply looking for something more fun.'

He added: 'Not only does Cotton Candy make a fun addition to the fruit bowl or packed lunch, it tastes great which is first and foremost for all products we sell.'

Sainsbury's is also planning to resume sales of Strawberry Grapes this month, a small grape variety sourced from Greece with a distinctive strawberry-like taste.

The variety was originally launched five years ago, and will also be available from Thursday 1 September in 41 stores, priced €3.39 (£3.00) for 400g.
