Rubens Apples National Fruit Show awards

The Rubens apple variety left its mark on the recent National Fruit Show trade fair in the UK by walking away with seven of the event's top awards, including the prestigious double of Tastiest Apple and Best Apple in Show.

The winning batch of apples came from growers Jenner and Sons, who won a total of six awards for their crop of Rubens, while the seventh award was handed to AR Neaves and Sons who won the Tastiest Apple competition.

'I am so enthusiastic about the Rubens variety and this is a great accolade for both the Rubens and us as growers,' said Ken Jenner. 'I'm very pleased about winning the 'Best in show' award and if they haven't already, consumers should give Rubens a try.'

Sarah Calcutt, business development manager at English fruit marketing group Norman Collett, noted that consumers in the UK are becoming more aware of not just British-grown apples, but of the range of varieties available to them.

'Rubens is a relative newcomer to the shopping basket but is becoming increasingly popular – these awards will add to the growing popularity,' she explained.

The National Fruit Show took place in near Maidstone in southern England on 20-21 October this year.
