The Italian division of Dutch vegetable seed specialist Rijk Zwaan has unveiled a new variety of small, yellow melon under the brand Yellissimo.
Known to its developers as Tikal RZ, the smooth-skinned, oval melon weighs around 1.4kg-1.5kg, a size regarded by the developer as 'ideal' when it comes to transporting the fruit to market and carrying it home.
It is also said to offer a much sweeter taste than traditional varieties as well as a pleasing appearance, as well as storing well.
Its white flesh, meanwhile, is described by Rijk Zwaan Italia as 'extremely sweet' and should appeal to consumers who place a particular value on the taste of the melons they buy.
As a result, the variety is set to be sold as a premium product at a higher than average price.
'Tikal RZ has also been conceived to meet the demands of the trade and operators in the sector,' said a spokesperson for Rijk Zwaan Italia.
Yellissimo melons will be sold on the Italian market the whole year round, with melons produced in Italy itself available from June to October, and overseas supplies filling the gap from November to May.
Yellissimo is part of Rijk Zwaan's Sensational Flavours range, which includes a number of high added-value varieties offering unique organoleptic qualities.
