German retailer Rewe has opened a second new store concept under its new Rewe To Go banner, a modern, convenience-based format that aims to offer a full range of fresh and healthy products for consumption either on site or on the go.
The company said it had established the new banner in order to offer German consumers in busy, urban areas an alternative to fast food outlets, snack bars and bakeries, with its second store on the Schadowstrasse in central Düsseldorf following the recent opening of the country's first such centre in Cologne.
Other Rewe To Go outlets are expected to follow in due course, commented Lionel Souque, Rewe's head of supermarkets in Germany. 'With this new concept we are using our core expertise in fresh food and offering consumers an attractive and quick alternative when it comes to on-the-go shopping and lunchtimes,' he said.
Among the 800 or so individual items on sale at the new store are a broad range of ready-to-eat fresh produce, including salads, portions of fruit, sandwiches, sushi and freshly baked pastries, as well as nine different types of fresh coffee.
Rewe said the new stores would not necessarily charge higher prices for the products, despite the fact that they will be positioned in areas with high footfall, such as busy city streets, railway stations, subway stations, shopping centres and airports.
