German food retailer Rewe has officially opened a brand new distribution centre in Oranienburg, on the outskirts of the country's capital Berlin.
The 53,000m2 centre, which covers a total land area equivlaent to 28 football pitches and was constructed at a cost of around €60m, will supply approximately 10,000 different product lines to more than 355 outlets in the surrounding region.
As well as Rewe's own-name stores, the distribution centre will manage supply to other banners in the group, including nahkauf, Karstadt, Coop-Märkte and Hit hypermarkets.
A total of 100 trucks will carry fresh fruiot and vegetables, frozen products, milk and dry goods from the facility to individual stores.
At an official ceremony to open the centre, Rewe board member and logistics director Frank Wiemer said the new DC meant that the grocer's east German division was fully equipped when it came to its store distribution network.
'Rewe Ost's logistics are ideally positioned for the future, with storage locations in Neudietendorf, Rüsseina and now Oranienburg,' he said.
