Germany's Rewe Group is to hand out a free apple to every child visiting its Rewe and Nahkauf supermarkets as part of a major campaign on sustainability being undertaken by various retailers in the country.
In addition, this coming Thursday (16 September), the group said it planned to distribute free bananas to children visiting its stores, as well as a specially published brochure called Mampf (Chomp) which will offer tips on exercise and nutrition, plus a poster of German football star Luka Podolski.
'The Germany-wide Sustainability Action Week from 13-18 September 2010 isn't the only time in which the retailer has shown the public its commitment to sustainability by encouraging a healthy diet,' the group said in a statement. 'Since 2000, we have supported the 5-am-Tag (5-a-Day) movement as a founding member.'
This school year, the group plans to hand out around 250,000 specially designed school bags to young pupils, containing an apple, a banana, an orange, a pear, a fruit juice pack and a kiwifruit with a spoon.
