French organics

According to La Tribune, Carrefour is currently searching for a suitable site in Paris to open its first Carrefour Bio outlet dedicated to organic produce.

Meanwhile, other French retailers appear to be planning similar moves, equally in the Paris area.

Auchan is reportedly set to test a new Coeur de Nature banner, avoiding any reference to the Auchan name or logo.

Leclerc is also understood to be interested in following the organic route, with plans to devote 20 per cent of a new 2,000m2 store in Houilles to organics.

Such moves have been welcomed by Biocoop, the leading French retailer for organics with 333 stores, which anticipates a rise in sales as a result.

Between 2001 and 2011, sales of organics quadrupled, according Agence Bio, to €4bn and, despite a slowdown in 2009 as a result of the economic crisis, rose again last year by some 14 per cent.
