The south-eastern Italian region of Puglia is to trial a new regional brand on several different types of fresh produce after the European Union gave its official approval to the scheme.
The Products of Puglia trademark will be used on at least five of the region's fresh fruit and vegetable items: table grapes, cherries, asparagus, citrus and artichokes.
'The scheme will be rolled out as a trial,' commented regional Agriculture Minister Dario Stefàno. 'This will be done for at least five products from our fresh produce basket.'
As well as being important features in the Italian fresh produce basket, all of the products in question are key export products.
Suppliers will be allowed to use the new brand on the condition that they meet certain levels of quality, certification and traceability.
