Wind farm

Revolution Energy and the Port of Corpus Christi will today celebrate the opening of the first phase of its Harbor Wind Energy Farm– apparently one of the first wind energy farms to be located on industrial port property in North America.

The project, which began in 2006, is being developed on the north side of the Port Corpus Christi’s inner harbour, according to a press release from the port.

The wind farm is scheduled to begin operations in early 2012 after starting to transmit power to the grid last month.

“The Port is honored have Revolution Energy as one of its tenants,” said Mike Carrell, chairman of the Port Corpus Christi Commission.

“This project marks a step forward towards the Port’s support to the future of clean energy; positioning the port as one of America’s Wind Energy Ports leaders.”

The construction of the project has already had a positive impact on the area’s economy, with a total of six wind turbines installed costing US$20m.

Of that total, over US$7m has been pumped into the local economy for construction related activity during the six-month construction period.

The Harbor Wind farm is set to generate 30,000,000kWh per year of clean energy, equal to the electricity needs of nearly 2,500 homes, the Port of Corpus Christi said.

“The Port has been very supportive of this project from the very beginning. Our wind project is another sign of the diversification of energy supply at the Port and the local community,” explained Tibor Hegedus, general manager of Revolution Energy.
