Leading fresh produce brand Pink Lady has announced that it will be the headline sponsor of a new international photography award dubbed “Pink Lady Food Photographer of the Year 2012”.

The competition, launched this week, is open to professional and amateur photographers, offering them the chance to showcase their work and win the grand prize of £5,000 (€5,720).

A special ‘Apple a day’ category will judge the 'most exciting, creative, inventive and beautiful images of an apple', with each entry generating a £2 donation to Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity.

The competition will reportedly be judged by a panel of food journalists, photographers, retail giants and chefs, with the winners being announced at The Mall Galleries in London on 24 April 2012.

“This is a great, unique opportunity,' said Andy Macdonald, managing director of Coregeo UK, the master licensor of Pink Lady in the UK. 'The synergy between high quality food photography and Pink Lady is clear – beautiful images have played a huge part in the idea of the brand as a premium and help both consumers and retailers to understand the value of the product.'

The competition also includes a ‘Young Photographer’ category, which Macdonald believes sits perfectly with Pink Lady as a ‘family’ brand.

'It’s an apple that is loved by mums and given to their children, so those young photographers brought up on Pink Lady apples can now show their skill by entering the awards,' he said. 'From the professional to the amateur, there is a wide audience for this promotion.'
