Peru’s Association of Mango Producers and Exporters (Apem) is reportedly planning to redirect its mango exports to Asia this season due to the economic situation in Europe and the US.
“For that purpose we have created a self-tax in Apem that allows us to have a budget focused on the promotion of Peruvian mango in these markets,” said Apem president Mario Salazar and reported Andina.
The target market will be China given that Peru’s mango exports to the mainland are currently low because sendings arrive after the Chinese New Year celebration – a festival in which people give red fruit as a sign of esteem and friendship.
According to Salazar, a delegation of suppliers from Apem will also attend Asia’s biggest trade show for fresh fruits and vegetables –Asia Fruit Logistica – on 7-9 September in Hong Kong.
