The value of geographical indicators came under the spotlight this week as the Origen España (Origin Spain) association held its annual general meeting in Madrid.
José Enrique Sanz of Cítricos Valencianos PGI, one of the members of the association, said it was expanding every year and now includes 68 entities representing 80 per cent of the geographical indicator labels registered in Spain.
The AGM heard how the ‘Abre los ojos ¡Disfruta!’ (Open your eyes. Enjoy!) marketing campaign, organised by Origen España in conjunction with the European Commission, is now underway.
The three-year campaign, which was launched in 2020, aims to raise awareness among consumers of the high quality of regional products bearing geographical indicators.
“Within this campaign, we are going to launch a strategic action that will raise the visibility of foods with PDOs and PGIs, to help consumers recognise the quality seals and the advantages offered by a certified and differentiated product,” Sanz said.
