EU organic logo

Following a two-year transition period, the organic leaf-shaped logo officially became mandatory on 1 July for all prepacked organic food products produced within the European Union.

According to the rule, the logo will remain optional for non-prepacked organic products, as well as for imports.

The logo will reportedly contain information on the source of the product, in addition to the code number of the control body.

Meanwhile, logos of other certification bodies, including the Soil Association and Fairtrade, will still be permitted alongside the organic logo.

According to a recent, encouraging report from EuroBarometer, 24 per cent of EU citizens already recognise the new logo.

The EU's commissioner for agriculture & rural development, Dacian Ciolos, commented: “Our hope is that the EU logo can further develop into a widely recognised symbol of organic food production across the EU, providing consumers with confidence that the goods are produced in-line with the strict EU organic farming standards.”
