Although Brittany has lost a third of its farms in the last 10 years, organic farming has grown by some 63 per cent in the same period, according to Le Télégramme.

The southwestern French region boasts some 1,529 farms, 500 more in the last two years, and over 3,000 farmers.

Out of 1,270 collectives in Brittany, 700 include an organic farm, which is 60 more than at the start of 2010.
And yet the region remains far behind the target laid out in the Grenelle de l'Environnement, the country's environmental agreement.

At present, only 3.2 per cent of Brittany's usable farm land is organic, well below the government's aim of six per cent.

France currently imports 35 per cent of all the organic products sold in the country, the majority being cereals, fruit and vegetables, and the government is eager to reduce this figure.
