Nunhems has tipped what it has called the 'new generation of Galia melons', the Kirene variety, for big things following strong feedback from the supply and consumption chain in Europe.
According to the vegetable seed group, Kirene melons combine great aroma and taste with a long shelf-life, featuring brilliant colour, a juicy texture, a sweet fragrance and a good taste while staying firm from the field to the plate.
'Kirene Galia has it all, for growers, retailers, food processing professionals and consumers,' said Claude Guérin, Nunhems Produce Chain Specialist for melons. 'It's truly a full-chain product that satisfies everyone's most demanding criteria. This year's harvest, whichbegan in June and is continuing throughout July, is living up to its promises, and surpassing expectations.'
Nunhems says that the variety is standing out on supermarket shelves across Europe thanks to its fragrance, packaging and even its bright yellow colour.
'Kirene really appears as the ideal melon since its size is just right (on average 4, 5 and 6 in 40x30 boxes) and above all because it featureseverything that anyone would want in a melon, for all the senses,' Guérin added. 'Kirene is also attracting professional food processors who are selling it sliced and in fruit salads because, once it's cut, itholds up really well and does not lose its juices.'
The melon maintains its qualities after several days of storage, the group explains, with a small seed cavity also meaning there is little waste.
'We are convinced, as we get feedback from the entire supply and consumption chain, that Kirene is destined to become a new successful category,' Guérin said.
