UK agricultural organisation the National Farmers’ Union (NFU), a group that represents farmers and growers of England and Wales, has declared its support for a campaign to eliminate confusion around local sourcing.

The NFU is backing the ‘Truly Local, Truly British’ campaign, which was launched last year by catering company Compass Group, and is seeking to “define unambiguously” what the words ‘British’ and ‘local’ mean in relation to food provenance.

Campaign organisers say that as well as giving consumers peace of mind about the true origin of their food, the initiative will support British farmers and producers through helping them to supply their produce to more local and UK client sites.

In a statement, the company said that consumers who eat ‘Truly British, Truly Local’ food in any of Compass’ sites, will have “complete assurance” that ingredients come from a British or local farmer or producer rather than from a local warehouse or wholesaler.

‘Truly Local’ applies only to food which uses locally produced ingredients, grown and harvested within a 50 mile radius of the Compass client location where it is consumed.

The NFU’s John Mercer said: “The NFU supports the efforts that Compass has gone to, to ensure provenance of locally produced food, for the Truly British, Truly Local scheme.

“It’s admirable to see the clarity in understanding from Compass, which helps to promote truly British food in the varied catering outlets Compass operates.”
