LAVA, the cooperative umbrella organisation of Flandria auctions in Belgium, has added Flandria-quality pak choi, red beetroot and chervil to its premium range.
These new items are grown both outdoors and under glass and comply with the same rules on environmentally friendly cultivation as other Flandria produce.
Pak choi, also known as Chinese cabbage, is an Asian cabbage variety that is available all year round. “This relatively unknown vegetable has attracted more attention in recent years,” explained Gert Vets, produce quality supervisor at the Mechlin auction. “Demand is growing, particularly among the immigrant community, and Belgian consumers also want to try something new now and then.”
Red beetroot fits in with the current trend to upgrade forgotten vegetables, while chervil is a classic herb used to flavour a variety of dishes.
“It’s a definite commercial advantage that our buyers can now sell pak choi, red beetroot and chervil under the Flandria quality label,” said Mr Vets. “It offers them guaranteed, uniform quality. Our experience at the Flandria auctions is that buyers want to be part of the growing Flandria success story.”
