A prewash product from Natureseal will go on show at the PMA Fresh Summit event in Atlanta, US, next month, designed to maintain the quality and extend the shelf-life of fresh-cut and minimally processed fruit and vegetables.
The First Step 300D prewash, which is based on a combination of fruit acids and minerals, has received the Organic Materials Review Institute listing, which allows it to be used in certified organic production of food processing and handling according to USDA National Organic Program rules.
First Step has already received approval from the UK Soil Association and ECOCERT in France, and is seen as a viable alternative to chlorine-based washes without concerns caused by the storage and use of hazardous halogenated chemicals.
'First Step provides many benefits to both conventional and organic processors alike,' the group noted. 'Unlike chlorine based treatments, which can leave an undesirable odour or even a taste taint, these products are odourless and tasteless, leaving the end produce with a more wholesome appeal. Furthermore, First Step is considered to be safer for workers and kinder to the environment.'
