Dutch fresh produce marketer The Greenery has announced that Dr Stephan Peters has been appointed as a member of the jury for the Nature Counts sustainability initiative, which recognises growers that achieve exceptional sustainability performance.
Dr Peters, who works for the Netherlands Nutrition Centre in the field of food safety and scientific developments, will help evaluate different initiative put forward in terms of content and how they respond to consumer demand.
The Nature Counts endorsement will be awarded by a jury of independent experts including retailers, growers and academics working in areas such as crop protection, health, CO2 usage and sustainable trends. Growers supplying The Greenery with fresh produce that meets the strict assessment criteria will be entitled to apply the Nature Counts label to their packaging.
Growers will be assessed on the basis of energy consumption, crop protection, transparency, waste, water, employment and nature and landscape conservation, and must achieve exceptional scores in one of these areas and above average scores in all others to qualify.
