Mission Produce has added an organic line to its recently launched Minis Small But Mighty range of bagged small avocados.
Weighing approximately 3.5oz each, they are being marketed as “the perfect single-serving avocado with the textbook amount of avocado for a sandwich, a smoothie or healthy organic snack…and zero food waste”.
Brent Scattini, Mission’s vice president of sales and marketing said: “This Organic Minis bag holds true to our initiative to efficiently sell what the tree produces.
“By creating this package for small organic fruit, it gives us the opportunity to develop a retail organic bag that addresses a consumer need while optimising our fruit utilisation from the tree.”
Organic avocado trees have always produced extra small avocados, but they are typically packed in bulk for foodservice.
However, with the advent of healthy-snacking trends, to-go packaging and 100-calorie packs, the company spotted a niche for a value-added small organic avocado. Megan Berenbach, organic category manager for Mission, said: “Our Organic Minis bag adds to the options that we can present to our retail customer base.”
The Organic Minis are currently supplied from Mexico and California, with additional availability from coming on stream this summer.
They are packaged in 2lb “Value Pack” bags, with approximately 8-10 mini avocados in each bag, as well as a 6-count bag. The bags are also Heart-Check certified by the American Heart Association.
