Promotions on the US retail market boosted mango sales by 231 per cent in volume terms during the first three months of 2011, according to the US-based National Mango Board.
NMB designates US$0.75 from each carton of mangoes exported to the US towards promotions and studies into sales and consumption.
NMB said 4,764 mango promotions took place in 7,701 stores during the three-month period.
The organisation invested some US$115,798 in promotions and studies across the US.
According to the Association of Peruvian Mango Producers (Promango), continued promotions of this type are “hugely important” for the trade since there are still areas in the US where the fruit is not consumed.
Peru produces around 90,000 to 120,000 tonnes of mangoes each season, Promango said.
