Alvaro Luque has been named president of Avocados From Mexico (AFM), the body that promotes Mexican avocados in the US. The organisation was formed last year from the merger of the marketing divisions of MHAIA and APEAM, which represent US avocado importers and Mexican producers respectively.
Luque, who was formerly vice president of marketing at Mission foods, takes over from Tim O’Connor, who headed up the organisation between April and September 2013.
According to AFM nearly 44m lbs of Mexican avocados were imported into the US during the week of 19 January in the run up to Super Bowl Sunday. Combined with the 4m lbs shipped to other destinations, the 48m lb volume total set a new record for the country, the organisation said.
