Supervalu's chief executive officer Craig Herkert has announced at the company's annual general meeting that it will roll out a new local produce programme this summer.

Under the title 'Win with fresh produce', the scheme will see special labels introduced for fresh produce noting the source of its fruit and vegetables, with signs highlighting 'just arrived' and 'locally harvested' products.

'This programme brings another level of hyper-local marketing into our stores, where the shopper knows that we support the local economy by purchasing locally, it sends a positive message about our stores,' Mr Herkert told the meeting.

Meanwhile, Supervalu's board of directors has adopted a new annual share repurchase programme authorising the company to purchase up to US$70m of its common stock through to 30 June 2011.

The annual authorisation programme replaces the existing US$70m share repurchase programme authorised in May 2009 under which approximately 220,000 shares were repurchased at around US$2.9m.
