Stephan Weist, managing director of German fresh produce supplier Landgard Obst & Gemüse, is poised to make a surprise return to Rewe, the Cologne-based supermarket group with whom he began his career in the fruit and vegetable industry.
Weist, who joined Landgard in 2004 from multinational fruit marketer Chiquita, is set to rejoin the retailer this coming November, German weekly Fruchthandel reported.
It is understood that from the start of January 2014 he will take up the position of head of category management for fresh fruit, vegetables and flowers.
He originally joined Rewe in 1984, working as a buyer until he left in 1999.
Following his departure, he found himself heading up one of Germany's biggest fresh produce importers, Atlanta, which was the sole distributor of Chiquita-branded fruit in both Germany and Austria.
When Chiquita decided to acquire its commercial partner in 2003, Weist took on a new role as the company's business director for central Europe, a position he held until his move to Landgard.
