Hamburg Süd has announced that it is combining with classification society Germanischer Lloyd to jointly develop an innovative data management system to capture all environmentally relevant ship operation information.
Named the 'GL Emission Manager', the system will allow for a detailed analysis of all relevant data across the entire shipping fleet, thus allowing Hamburg Süd to a valid basis for reducing the emissions from its own deployed fleet.
To capture the necessary data, the GL Emission Manager will have a data recorder installed on board the vessels to collect information, while the central 'Green Server' will be located at Germanischer Lloyd and will be fed with data from the recorders.
'There is as yet no comparable way of systematically collecting and analysing all environmentally relevant information from vessels in service,' said Arnt Vespermann, member of the executive board of Hamburg Süd. 'It gives us the capability to satisfy the most diverse reporting requirements quickly and easily.'
According to the German shipper, the new system is to be used across its entire fleet from the start of 2012 and, in addition to the environmental aspects, will make other operational information – including vessel positioning, cargo mix or weather conditions – available on demand.
