Americans are expected to consume almost 208m avocados during Super Bowl weekend, an increase of 32 per cent on last year’s total, according to the Hass Avocado Board.

HAB executive director Emiliano Escobedo said consumption has risen steadily over recent years, climbing 1,200 per cent since 2000.

“Avocados and the Big Game go hand in hand,” he said. “This year, the Big Apple will meet the Big Avocado, as once again, more and more Americans will enjoy avocados during the game.”

According to Escobedo, the amount of avocados consumed during the event is the equivalent to 230 times the weight of the Statue of Liberty. Mexico will supply the bulk of volumes, followed by Chile. Limited quantities of Californian and Dominican Republic product will also be available.

Maggie Bezart from Avocados From Mexico said from last week the country had been shipping more than 13,500 tonnes of avocados a week to the US, with this figure set to rise to more than 18,000 tonnes a week as the Super Bowl approaches.
