Dutch company The Greenery and Netherlands-based supplier New Sensations have signed an agreement with South African group Capespan Exports to produce the trademarked pear varieties Sweet Sensation and Gold Sensation under licence in South Africa.
The agreement, announced this morning in Barendrecht, Holland, will enable The Greenery and Capespan Exports eventually to begin supplying the new pear varieties year round.
New Sensations, which has an exclusive global sales agreement with The Greenery, recently acquired the exclusive licensing rights for the Southern Hemisphere from variety owner Next Fruit Generation (NFG).
'Both Capespan Exports and The Greenery are convinced that licensed varieties are the future of fruit production and marketing,' the two companies said in a statement. 'This agreement allows Capespan Exports to be part of the global supply plan to deliver these varieties year round to customers, meeting NFG’s strategy for the worldwide positioning of its varieties.'
Under the terms of the agreement, Capespan Exports has committed to developing production area amounting to 'a substantial number of hectares' over the next 11 years.
NFG and New Sensations have themselves set a target of some 2,500ha to be planted in the Southern Hemisphere in that time.
'For both companies, the agreement reflects a huge step forward in successfully introducing new varieties to their growers and customers,' the statement added.
