After months of wrangling, Germany's Federal Council, the Bundesrat, has finally given the green light to a scheme which will distribute free fruit to schoolchildren throughout the country.

As reported by Fruchthandel Magazine, the crucial breakthrough came after Germany's various regional authorities reached agreement on how the project will be funded, which means the deal can now be enshrined in German law.

'I am delighted that this now paves the way for the EU school fruit programme to be implemented in Germany,' commented Federal Minister Ilse Aigner.

A pilot project which ran in Germany earlier this year had proven the scheme to be a successful one and easy to implement, Ms Aigner added.

'This was an urgent decision because the school year has already begun,' she noted.
