A new study by the International Food Information Council (IFIC) has revealed that consumers in the US turn to fruit and vegetables when it comes to considering healthy food options.

In the organisation's latest Functional Foods/Foods for Health Consumer Trending Survey, the top functional foods named by consumers as being perceived to be healthy were fruit and vegetables, followed by fish, fish oil and seafood, dairy, meat and poultry and herbs/spices.

Additionally, the study found that 89 per cent of US consumers agreed that certain foods have benefits that go beyond basic nutrition, and may reduce the risk of disease or other health concerns – an increase on the figure obtained two years ago, IFIC said.

Benefits that consumers considered fruit and vegetables to provide included healthier hearts, growth and development in children and bone health.

The study, which IFIC has been conducting every two or three years since 1998, provides ongoing insights into consumer interests and beliefs.
