Freshfel Europe

European Obesity Day falls on Saturday 21 May this year and Freshfel Europe has taken the opportunity to communicate its message about the important contribution fresh produce can make in the fight against obesity.

Raquel Izquierdo de Santiago, Freshfel's food policy adviser, explained: 'Increasing scientific evidence indicates that fruit and vegetables are important components of a healthy and balanced diet. Unfortunately, consumption of fresh produce is at best stagnating and is, in many member states, well below the minimum WHO recommendation of at least 400g a day.'

Brussels-based Freshfel recently launched a website, www.enjoyfresh.eu, to encourage European citizens to eat more fresh produce.

Communication policy adviser Sebastian Kruse reiterated: 'Consumers should in their daily lives always have in mind that fresh produce offers with all its diversity a wonderful and delicious eating experience.'
