Foods from Spain has announced the winner of its fifth annual National Primary Schools Competition to promote Spanish fresh produce in the UK.
Childrenfrom the St Laurence CE Primary School in Jockeyfield, Shropshire, tookfirst place in this year’s competition, which Foods from Spain runs each year.
The winning school designed a collage on the theme of healthy eating, titled 'Juicy, crunchy, munchy, sweet. It’s Spanish and it’s great to eat!'
The year five class worked on the entry together, to create an inventive collage of Spanish fruits and vegetables.
Theschool beat hundreds of entries from around the country to receive the first prize of £2,000 to spend on new equipment or facilities. The collage has already been displayed at the National Geographic Store on London’s Regent Street.
The judging panel for the competition included representatives from the London International Gallery of Children’s Art (LIGCA) and the editor of National Geographic Kids magazine.
María José Sevilla, director of Foods from Spain, said: 'Educating children about eating healthily and leading a healthy lifestyle is vital – this competition is a great way to do this. The standard of this year’s entries has been exceptional. We were very impressed by the way the children managed to combine healthy eating messages with Spanish culture so creatively.'
The Bigyn School, inCarmarthenshire won second place in the competition - and a £1,000 prize – while Fremington Primary & Nursery School in Barnstaple, won£500 for its third-place collage.
Six collages were also chosen as winners in each of the year groups and special needs categories and receive Foods from Spain multimedia packs; runners up schools receive sets of Foods from Spain pencils.
All schools that entered the National Primary Schools Competition receive a certificate from the Spanish Ambassador – Carles Casajuana.
