Fernando Aguirre

Chiquita Brands International has announced that its chairman and chief executive officer Fernando Aguirre will this week appear on the US-based CBS reality series Undercover Boss.

Each week, the show follows a different executive as he or she goes on an undercover mission to examine the inner workings of their companies, getting a first-hand experience of the impact of their decisions on employees and the organisation as a whole.

'Going undercover inside Chiquita was an eye-opening experience,' said Mr Aguirre. 'CEOs don't often have the opportunity to connect with their employees in an unfiltered way, and participating in 'Undercover Boss' helped me achieve that.

'My family and I have been fortunate to live the 'American Dream' and going undercover helped me see how I can help others live their dreams at Chiquita and Fresh Express,' he added.

During the episode, Mr Aguirre had a close-up look at the industry while coring lettuces, driving a forklift at a banana distribution centre, drying lettuce in a salad processing factory and working to dispatch bananas from the largest banana port facility in the US.

'I was astounded to find out that I had been working in the lettuce fields with my CEO,' said Leo Urza, harvest coordinator for Chiquita's Fresh Express. 'It was a touching experience to see how much he cared about what was happening on the frontlines of our farm operations.

'Fernando did a good job of helping me core lettuce, but he certainly has a lot of room for improvement,' Mr Urza added. 'I think you'll see that when watching the show.'

Undercover Boss featuring Fernando Aguirre will be shown on CBS at 9pm-10pm ET/PT on Sunday 31 October.
