Peru’s organic banana exports have grown during the first three months of this year, with shipments to key markets in North America and Europe rising in spite of the difficult economic times.
During the first trimester of the year, organic banana exports increased by 18 per cent, reaching a total worth of €17m, according to data from the Peruvian Commission for the Promotion of Exports, Promperú.
Organic banana exports accounted for 37 of Peru’s total organic exports during the three-month period, during which export sales increased by 48 per cent compared with the same period a year before to €46m.
Peru’s principal markets for organic bananas are the US, Belgium and Germany, although it also recently entered the Chinese market. Other exports include mangoes, asparagus and maracuya.
