Spanish cherry grower-marketer SAT Edoa has announced plans to expand the distribution of its early cherries, marketed under the Cherries Glamour brand, by 35 per cent this season.
The move forms part of the company’s “preventative strategy” in light of the current economic downturn.
Available from 9 March to 23 April, the cherries will be marketed for the first time in Norway, Finland and Denmark and China during 2009.
Traditional markets, including Spain, France, Italy, the UK, Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany and Russia, will receive the bulk of the crop.
Lleida-based SAT Edoa said it expects to produce some 58,000kg (58 tonnes) of early cherries this season and anticipates similar prices to last year – €30-€130/kg, depending on the weight of the packs, which range from 200g to 1.5kg.
“The exclusive prices achieved for Cherries Glamour cherries is due to the fruit’s exclusive qualities including taste, sweetness, firmness, colour and it’s recognised glamour appeal,” SAT Edoa explained.
