German citrus importer Don Limón is this week launching Star Ruby grapefruit, marketed under its own label, in supermarkets across Europe.
The occasion will mark the first time that the company has marketed grapefruit under its own Don Limón brand, after years of importing the products from Florida.
The fruit will be available from February until mid April, depending on the climatic conditions in the US state.
Lars Halang, project manager for grapefruits from Florida at Don Limón, said the company was “optimistic” that it would be able to import grapefruit through the Port of Rotterdam until the end of March.
Mr Halang said the Star Ruby variety’s “unique taste” was due to its high sugar content combined with a relatively low level of fruit acid.
The company already currently markets limes and physalis under the Don Limón brand in a number of major European markets, including the UK, Germany and Sweden.
