UK fresh produce importer International Produce (IPL) handed logistics group Damco two prestigious awards for excellence in logistics and sustainability at the 3rd annual IPL logistics conference, which was held in the UK on 9 May.

Firstly, Damco's overall global contribution to IPL – part of the Walmart group and the boggest single importer of fresh produce in the UK – was recognised when they won the event's most coveted award, Service Provider of the Year.

IPL operations director Jason Kelly said Damco had won the title for 'their flexibility, support and exceptional service whilst also supporting IPL to exploit alternative modes of transport and reduce its carbon footprint'.

'This accolade is particularly pleasing as it bears testament to a real team effort by the Damco offices involved in servicing IPL around the world,' said Ole Schack Petersen, head of perishables at Damco. 'Damco offices in South Africa, Chile, USA, Canada, Morocco, Spain, Brazil and Costa Rica have all been directly involved in solving IPL’s needs over the past year.'

IPL also awarded Damco's UK operation with the title of Clearing and Forwarding Agent of the Year, with Kelly adding that the award was given to Damco UK for 'their constant focus on IPL’s account and for providing outstanding support to our individual business units. They have been instrumental in supporting our European logistics team in setting up an ex works supply chain from Morocco'.

On winning the award, Damco perishables business development manager James Hammond commented: 'I am very proud that we have received an award that shows the type of dedication that we strive to deliver to all our customers. In this case, we have helped IPL to roll out their direct sourcing strategy, which this year is taking off in Morocco, their second largest non-European source country. Damco in Morocco and Spain were instrumental in the set up in this market.'
