Barcelona-based Cultivar has launched a new label for kiwifruit grown in the Iberian Peninsula. Kiwiquí el de aquí will be used for fruit grown by a select group of producers in Spain and Portugal.
“In recent years we have been working to find the best producers in Galicia, Asturias and Portugal,” the company said in a press release. “Only those that meet our strict quality criteria are able to use the new label, that is synonymous with premium, locally-grown kiwifruit.”
Being closer to the market allows growers to harvest the fruit at a later stage and higher brix level, ensuring that it reaches consumers in optimum condition, Cultivar said.
“The proximity of our production base also allows to significantly reduce our transportation and storage costs which means we can sell the fruit at a very competitive price and enables us to cut our CO2 emissions,” the company added.
Kiwiquí will be available from December to July.
