Certificate marks latest milestone in corporation’s ongoing sustainability drive
The National Banana Corporation of Costa Rica (Corbana) has been granted ISO 50001:2018 certification for its energy management system by the Technical Standards Institute of Costa Rica (Inteco). This certification applies to the activities and services that use energy at the research centre, located in La Rita, Pococí, Limón.
Corbana has carried out various actions to improve energy efficiency and reduce consumption at the centre. These include optimising the use of air conditioners by rearranging schedules according to operational needs, leading to significant energy savings outside of working hours.
Efficient operating criteria have also been established for laboratory equipment, such as ovens and autoclaves, and the progressive replacement of lighting fixtures with more efficient options, among others, has been planned.
“This certification is the result of Corbana’s ongoing efforts to improve its processes and strengthen its commitment to sustainability in the banana industry,” said Marcial Chaverri Rojas, the corporation’s general manager. “The implementation of an efficient energy management system allows us to reduce our environmental footprint and contribute to mitigating climate change.”
Last December, Corbana renewed its Essential Costa Rica license, a recognition granted to companies that meet standards in areas such as sustainability, innovation and social progress.
Corbana also has the Carbon Neutral certification, which validates the efforts made to manage and reduce its greenhouse gas emissions, in compliance with applicable national and international standards.
“These certifications are part of the corporation’s initiatives to improve the management of its operations and strengthen its commitment to sustainability,” Corbana said.
