Cyprus Consumers’ Association cites government data to suggest margins on fresh produce prices are “unreasonably high”
Retail prices for fresh fruit and vegetables remain a “serious problem” for consumers, according to the Cyprus Consumers’ Association, after it revealed average retail profit margins of 165 per cent on the price paid to producers for 15 items in the government’s e-Kofini price observatory.
In a statement issued via the Cyprus News Agency, the association called on the authorities to address the matter “as soon as possible”.
It argued: “the gap between the sales price from various producer associations and the retail price still remains at unreasonably high levels”.
The association’s research indicated average retail margins of between 97 per cent and 342 per cent on the 15 items for which prices were recorded.
“The above data lead to the conclusion that there continues to be a serious problem in the marketing of fresh fruits and vegetables, leading to excessive increases in their retail prices,” the group added.
“Unfortunately, the gap between the selling price from various producer associations and the retail selling price continues to remain at unjustifiably high levels.”
